Since we had 2 room reserved, I thought I would up the ante to $50. Young gal at front desk immediately returned the $50 and said we could upgrade for x amount per night. I was so impressed with her honesty that I insisted she keep a $10 tip. |

You could say the $20 trick worked, however the other two parties were upgraded for free with out asking when they checked in so the $20 was not necessary. This was late on a Wednesday evening so that may have had something to do with it... |

After researching the reviews about the "twenty dollar sandwich" I opted to upgrade to Tower 2. I approached the desk to a Latino woman in her late twenties, early thirties. I carefully folded my twenty with the big 20 insignia facing up between my state ID (top) and credit card (bottom) and when she took it, I immediately asked: "Would it be at all possible to be upgraded to a non-smoking Tower Two room?" She replied: 'I'll see what I can do.' Then she asked me if I wanted a view of the Strip and I replied I would. She then completed her transaction and handed back my cards (sans $20) and room information, "You're in tower two, floor 23, room 9. Have a pleasant stay." The room turned out to be two Queen beds, decent and exactly what I wanted. Thanks for the sandwich tip!!! Worked like a charm! |

This was the first time I ever tried the "Twenty Dollar trick" and it worked like a charm!
We booked 8/19-8/23 and booked the old standard rooms because it was extremely cheap for the four days. When I got to the counter the lady asked for my ID and I simply wrapped the $20 bill around my ID and asked he if she had any complimentary upgrades available. She took the $20 bill and didn't say a word. I felt pretty good at that point. She came back suing we would be in Tower 2 in their upgraded rooms which are normally an extra $20 per night. We ended up on the 17th floor with a great view of the pools! |

Worked like a charm. The young lady knew what was up when I gave her my sandwich. I said "I was wondering about any complementary upgrades" and I accually didn't even need to say that. Worked like a charm. I wondered what if I gave her a $50......... |

Checked in around 2pm and there was a bit of a line. Had the 20 between license and credit card. Asked the older Asian lady if there were any complimentary upgrades available, showing her the sandwich. She looked at it and showed me the price list for upgrades saying "no, only these upgrades".
I asked if she was sure, wiggling the sandwich. She assured me the answer was no.
Ow well.. I'll always try :) |

Told the girlfriend on the way down to Vegas about the "Trick" on getting an upgraded room. While waiting to check in she asked if I was going to try it and I said of course! Of the 4 desk clerks working I got the one I felt least likely to give me the upgrade but I still delivered the ID and credit card with the $20 tucked in between. I asked if there were any complementary room upgrades available and without even a blink the $20 was gone and the clerk was typing on her keyboard checking to see what was available. She told me she could upgrade me to the widescreen view room from the standard room I had booked for the 3 nights we were going to be there but it was facing the pool. I told her that was fine and thanked her. She said the room wasn't ready yet though and I would have to come back to her after awhile to get the key. She said she would call and get a rush on it and she picked up the phone. After no one answered, she said well... how about a room with a view of the strip. I thanked her again. She smiled and said enjoy your stay and thanks! |

We arrived at Excalibur later than expected due to a late arriving flight, coming from the UK I was getting tired and thought about backing out of the 'sandwich'
By the time I got to check in, I had my Credit Card and Passport ready with a 20 folded ready and decided to try it.
The lady on the desk was older than others around her, in her mid 40's.
I handed over my sandwich and asked if Tower 2 was available, told her that this was my 3rd visit to Excalibur and made some small talk.
After a few minutes of typing she handed me the room keys for 24th floor Tower 2 AND my $20 back telling me that it fell out of my Passport.
I let her keep the 20 and thanked her for being helpful.
The next day some friends were arriving and I met them to let them know floor/room number etc, and they had a better result than me with a different check in agent, I had ended up with a view of the back of the Castle, they got a strip view of NYNY and MGM |

Had booked 2 standard rooms online. Checked in by Alicia. Gave her my ID and credit card with 2x $20 bills wrapped around it (one for each room)and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Offered me deluxe rooms with strip view which normally cost $30 per room per night more. So $300 upgrade for $40 outlay. Result. |

I can't believe this worked! When the weekend started, we had everything ready to go: the cabana, the club, the limo, everything. Everything except the room! On the way to Vegas we saw a billboard for Excalibur. "Rooms starting at $59," it advertised. Right away, I pulled out my Sprint Nexus S and started an internet search for Excalibur. Meanwhile, my girlfriend was nagging: "Let me talk to them! You're driving!" I told her, "I make the plans. Let me handle this." What was I going to do? Let a woman make a business deal? Let a woman drive? Neither proposition appealed to me. When I got connected with the front desk, they told me they had a few rooms, and I booked one immediately over the phone. When we get there, the receptionist told me that it would be $89 per night! I told her about the billboard, and she made some lame excuse. Whatever, I wasn't going down without a fight. I slip her a 20 and ask her if there are any upgrades. She said we could immediately upgrade us from one Queen bed to TWO Twin beds! I accepted... but it still wasn't enough for me. I said ok, what else are you going to throw in? She said, "It depends on what you're looking for," as she eyed the $20 that was now on her side of the counter. I understood what she meant and took out another $20 (actually, two tens). She said she could get us access to the casino's player's club and a book of exclusive deals for various locations on the strip. Again, I jumped on it. How could you not?! Just as I was about to have her charge everything, I took a look at my girlfriend and remembered that her brother passed a way 3 years ago this weekend in a fireworks accident. I was determined to make this a beautiful weekend that would help her forget her troubles. I put down a Benjamin ($100 for you misinformed) and demanded that we get a room with the most gorgeous view LV has to offer. My girl and the receptionist were both astonished. Our room was immediately moved to a location with the best view of Luxor and its fireworks show. Happy 4th, baby. I love you. -M |

Done this here before with mixed results. I think it depends on the experience of the clerk and how busy the hotel is. As it is, this is MArch Madness week and many people are our on spring break. Often, the clerks don't know what to do. Or then go off to ask a manager what can be done. I usually tell them (truthfully) that I've stayed here many times, etc. But they can't apparently see this on their screen.
This time, the clerk went and did the manager thing and came back, gave me back my $20, and told me that he could upgrade me for an extra $20 a night (the standard rate). I said no thanks and just kept my basic room with it's uncomfortable chairs. |

So We went to check in minding you our other friends have already checked in earlier that day. i got this nice gentleman wearing aviators kinda older i slipped the 20 in between my id and credit card and said is their any complimentary upgrades he said we will see what we can do.. Gave me the 20 buck gave me an upgrade to the 24th floor widescreen room beautiful view.. While our friends were still in the standard room we went to check it out it was not that good... it was like motel 6 and ours was much better.. So we went down and see if we could be across from each other in rooms and the one lady would not do it and then man that helped me was like here let me take care of this so he did all of his work and we ended up both being in a wide screen room across the halls from each other!! It was amazing |

I tried the 20 dollar trick and it got me no where. She was a younger girl I put the 20 between my credit card and lincense and she said what is this for. I of course asked about a compliementry room upgrade and was shot down. She returned the 20 and we got a room that they should have paid us to stay in. No luck this time but will try again when I return to vegas. |

Walked up to a 20 something black female, had the twenty folded up in between my card and ID. Simply stated "I wanted to know about any complementary room upgrades" She said she'll see what she can do, typed away at the computer and then came back and said that she could get a room with a view as a free upgrade but the widescreen rooms were booked. I knew this was B.S. but I took what she offered happily and she even gave me back my twenty. |

Gave it a go after reading this site. Just put the $20 on the counter, made small talk, asked if the hotel was really booked, etc.
Finished the paperwork and the check in guy says "Okay, here's the room you paid for and here's the room you're getting (deluxe suite)." I said "And here's the tip you're getting, thanks!" slid the $20 up to him.
Thanks! |

Did the trick, but attendant (white female in her 50s) said no upgraded rooms were available (odd for a Wednesday).
She me on the 28th (top) floor though, but this was quite pointless since there was no view - it just meant a longer elevator ride.
She then said "is this a tip", and who am I to say no, so I lost the $20. |

Arrived in Vegas early in the morning and checked-in at 8am. Only counter open had 3 ladies chatting behind the counter. Tried the $20 trick, only to have the (new?) staff turn to ask the manager(!!!) behind her about possible upgrades. The answer was obviously "Yes, if you pay". She upgraded us to a supposedly better room (didn't feel that way). Wasted a good $20! |

I reserved two run of the house base level rooms with an interconnecting door. I wrapped 2 $20.00s around my drivers license and requested flat screen TV interconnecting rooms with a view of the strip. This would be a double upgrade. The rooms were interconnecting on the 25th floor with a fantastic view of the Luxor and Mandalay bay, very successful. |

My girlfriend and I got to Excalibur pretty early in the morning. (9:30am) Too early for checkin. Came back around 11:30 or noon. Tried the trick w/ a middle aged woman. She took the $20 and said most suites aren't available til later in the day. She said she could give us a room w/ a nice view of the Luxor. We figured ok. Got to the room (in the older tower not renovated) Hated from the start. Nice view of Luxor but strait out of the 70s. When the bellhop came up w/ our bags, he asked how everything was, if we needed tickets to shows, etc.. Told him that we were a little disappointed w/ the room. We said it was our anniversary and that I had tipped the front desk woman and we were hoping for a little nicer room. He got on the rooms phone and put a call into a friend of his at the front desk. 3 1/2 mins. later he took our bags and us downstairs got us a new key and up to the newly renovated tower over looking the 4 pools. Room had granite in bathroom and a nice flat screen on the wall. (Didn't have high def) but still beat the pants out of the first room. I gave the guy $20 bucks and we both thanked him repeatedly. This guy was really cool and helped us have a great trip. He also gave us free passes to a few clubs. I know you can get these almost anywhere in Vegas, but he was great anyway. |

Check in around 5pm, no line up, I inquired as to the opportunity for an upgraded room and the response was affirmative. I asked if it had a view and it did not. One did not have the opportunity to pick the check in staff as you were directed to the next person. I already had the $20 under my credit card.
The Excalibur was great, I have no issue staying there again. Our room was at the end of the hall, for me that is great. Amenities in the bathroom , pillow top mattress and clean room as well as the 42" plasma TV helped. |

Awesome.... Worked again. This is four times in a row now (PH, Paris, Monte Carlo, Excalibur). Did the samich trick. She laughed and said " You so funny". She laid the $20 up on the counter and said see what she could do. Came back with "widescreen room upgrade". I asked if it was strip view and she said hold on a minute. Did some more typing and said she found a nice room us. I said thanks and she said "So this is for me?" and I replied of course. Disappeared into her pocket very quickly...... Gotta Love it. |
